In conversation: Vanley Burke
Hear Vanley Burke, the iconic Godfather of Black British Photography discuss the importance of Black communities telling their own stories. Vanley was in conversation with Dawn Cameron and Out of Many Festival Director Rebellion to Romance exhibition curator Susan Pitter, with the globally acclaimed chronicler of Black narratives also sharing his approach to capturing portraits of second-generation West Indians of Leeds for the Rebellion to Romance exhibition. A part of the Out of Many Festival made possible thanks to National Lottery players, by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England and staged in partnership with Leeds Libraries.

Ring the Alarm

Ring the Alarm sees an insightful panel and sparkling performance with national and local pioneers on the history, role and impact of sound systems from their genesis in Jamaica, to their evolution in Leeds and the UK, part of the Jamaica Society Leeds’ Out of Many Festival. Guest contributors include Mark Iration from internationally renowned Leeds-own Iration Steppas Sound System, Lady Vee and Jeffrey ‘Skully’ Walwyn. Thanks to National Lottery players, the Out of Many Festival is made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.

Laureate to Laureate

Scintillating conversation between two acclaimed Poets Laureate, Jamaica’s Olive Senior and the UK’s Simon Armitage, chaired by poet Jason Allen-Paisant. Part of the Jamaica Society Leeds’ Out of Many Festival, celebrating 60 years of Jamaican independence and the rich cultural impact the small Caribbean island has had on the UK and the world. Introduction from Out of Many Festival Director Susan Pitter, the National Librarian of Jamaica Beverley Lashley, and Liz Jolly, Chief Librarian of the British Library. Filmed at Howard Assembly Room in Leeds on October 4, 2022. Staged in collaboration with the British Library and the National Library of Jamaica, in partnership with Howard Assembly Room and with the support of Leeds City Council. Thanks to National Lottery players, the Out of Many Festival is made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.
